Doubly Blessed: New Homes Dedicated for Two Families in Sussex County, Delaware’s Georgetown Point

Not too long ago, the Roblero Perez and Sanchez Garrido families of Sussex County, Delaware, were living in rental housing that lacked adequate heat and was structurally unsound. That all changed recently when both families were presented the keys to their new homes, which they helped build in Georgetown Point. The homes were part of the first phase of the Habitat project being built by volunteers in the community.

Jill Gizzio founded DogToys.com, a successful Internet-based business in Exton, Pennsylvania, just outside Philadelphia, in 1997 with $20,000 in personal savings. DogToys.com sells thousands of high quality pet supplies through its websites and affiliate sites. Since then, she has nurtured it into a multi-million dollar business, with four full-time and a number of seasonal part-time employees. So successful has this e-tail business been that it outgrew the warehouse space the company had been leasing. That’s when Gizzio decided to purchase her own building to be used as a distribution point and business headquarters.

“Down Home Homemade Pudding,” based in Factoryville, PA, has provided its homemade rice pudding to delis, grocery stores and restaurants throughout Northeast Pennsylvania and neighboring areas of New York and New Jersey for two decades. The wholesaler carries a unique selection of all natural rice pudding products, which are gluten- and preservative-free. The company also has a niche in the pudding market by offering a line of sugar-free puddings to its diabetic customers.

Positive change is happening throughout the Borough of Wilkinsburg, a 2.1-square-mile community located nine miles east of downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In 2005, Wilkinsburg was named one of 22 Pennsylvania Blueprint Communities (BC) – an FHLBank Pittsburgh initiative designed to help older neighborhoods get their second wind and plan for community renewal. Over the past seven years, it has been full steam ahead for Wilkinsburg BC team members.

Corry Memorial Hospital has been a community fixture for nearly 60 years in the town of Corry, Pennsylvania, located about 30 miles from the city of Erie. And like many rural hospitals, it has seen its infrastructure age and bed utilization decline with a significant shift from inpatient to outpatient services. Hospital administrators worked for years to come up with the financing to build a new hospital to better respond to community needs.
